How can Russia reach the World Cup 2022. Group layouts after a draw with Croatia

The new Russian team under the leadership of Valery Karpin drew with Croatia at Luzhniki. Zlatko Dalic’s team remains our main competitor in the fight to enter the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Here are the layouts in Group H before the matches with Cyprus and Malta.

After a draw at Luzhniki, Russia scored seven points and continues to share the first place with the Croats, yielding to them only in terms of the difference between goals scored and conceded. At the same time, the rivals of our team in the group played their matches. Slovenia and Slovakia also parted in peace – 1: 1. But the national team of Malta at home unexpectedly defeated Cyprus with a score of 3: 0. This is how the table of group H looks now:

Recall that the group winner is sent directly to the 2022 World Cup, and the team that will take second place will play in the play-offs.

In case of a victory over Croatia at home, our team would be able to increase their chances of participating in the 2022 World Cup. But now the Croats have a slight advantage, as they will still host Russia at their Maksimir stadium in Zagreb in mid-November – this match will be the last for Karpin’s team in the group.

However, our team has a lighter calendar. Russia will meet twice with Cyprus and once against Malta, Slovakia and Slovenia. The Croats, on the other hand, will face two matches against the Slovaks competing with the leaders, who have already scored six points, as well as a meeting with the Slovenes and trips to Cyprus and Malta.

From the point of view of possible getting into the joints, a goalless home draw with Zlatko Dalic’s team can be regarded as a positive result. Slovakia failed to get close to Karpin’s team, and she played twice with Croatia and went to Russia.

Now the Russian national team needs to take three points in matches against Cyprus and Malta, hoping for a misfire of the Croats. They play first away against Slovakia (September 4), and then at home with Slovenia (September 7). If everything goes well in the next matches, then our team will have an advantage in points before the decisive segment in October-November.
