For the first time in nine years Russia has its own people in the top 5 of the world ranking of the Association of tennis professionals (ATP). The top five broke 23-year-old Daniil Medvedev, who won Sunday’s tournament of a series “masters” in Cincinnati. In the final, Medvedev beat Belgian David Goffin – 7:6, 6:4. How about the great talent Daniel said about yourself a long time ago, however, had reason to doubt that the Russians will be able to open up to the end. At some point of hysterics talked more than about the game: in 2016, Medvedev has paid a huge penalty for a skirmish with the judge, who accused him of racism. At Wimbledon-2017 remembered how Daniel was thrown in the direction of the referee detail, clearly alluding to the partisanship of the latter. And how much of this time was broken rackets – are countless.

But Daniel grew up. Started working with a psychologist, married. And it came stability, and with it – results. The current season is still the best in his career Medvedev. The Russians had 44 victories: more than anyone in the season. In second place is the Spaniard Rafael Nadal with 41 winning the match.

The apotheosis became the last three weeks, during which Medvedev flew 2500 miles (from Washington to Montreal to Cincinnati), played more than once in a day and a half, but came with up to three finals in a row. Such performances have been the only players of the caliber of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and, as a rule, ended a successful performance at the main American tournament – the Open championship of the USA. No wonder Russians defeated by David Goffin in his speech said, “are You ready for new York”.

Medvedev was the first in nine years by the Russians in top-5 world ranking

Along the way, Medvedev became the youngest champion in Cincinnati since 2008, when it won 21-year-old Andy Murray. But for Russian fans more important is the fact that for the first time in nine years, we again have a player in the top 5. The last of our compatriots there appeared Nikolay Davydenko in June 2010. However, the main test of greatness ahead – already mentioned the U.S. Open, which will be held from 26 August to 8 September. By the way, the tournament “Grand slam” Medvedev never took place on the 1/8 finals. Think, Daniel in a suitable form to fix it.

Our could do in Cincinnati and a double, but in the final women’s event Svetlana Kuznetsova was no match for the mistress of court Madison Keys – 5:7, 6:7. But still the performance of the 34-year-old Russian woman allows to be optimistic for the US Open, which she, by the way, won in 2004.
