Skateboarding: It’s A New Generation

The 1920s marked the beginning of skateboarding and the invention of the skateboard. Skateboarding started slowly, but once it did, it took off like a wildflower. From the 1920s through 2012, the skateboarding industry has had comebacks. Every time the industry returned, it got worse. The new generation is now ready to enter the picture.

In the 1920s, the first skateboard was invented. A three-wheeled metal vehicle was constructed during the 1920s and the 1930s. The first four-wheeled aluminum skateboards were created in the 1940s. Skaters assembled their own wheels and trucks on a plank of wood in the 1950s. The first skateboard made in a factory debuted in the 1960s. The first documented retail store to sell skateboards was Val Surf in Southern California, a surf shop that started manufacturing its own complete skateboards. Skating became known among children as “sidewalk surfing.” Everything that was affected by sidewalk surfing, including techniques, appearance, and attitude. The period began in earnest. As skateboarding spreads and gains popularity, businesses find it difficult to meet customer demand. There were an increasing number of skateboarding publications, including Surf and SKATEBOARDER. The first known organized competition, sponsored by Makaha, took place in Hermosa, California, in the 1960s. The fibreflex was the first laminated skateboard made specifically for skaters and was the first pro model skateboard ever made (Makaha). The first skateboard shoe manufacturing and the first skate park were located in Anaheim, California, at this period. The Quebec city of Montreal also had a frenzy. Despite the fact that skateboarding was extremely widespread, many individuals did not like it and sought to outlaw it.

By the time the 1970s arrived, skateboarding had taken off. Frank Nasworthy’s Cadillac Wheels were among the first urethane wheels manufactured specifically for skateboarding. The Cadillac Wheels were discontinued two years later when Road Rider released their first skateboard wheels equipped with precision bearings. Bennett Trucks, created by Ron Bennett, were the first skateboard trucks we ever made exclusively for skating. Gull Wing Trucks, Stoker Trucks (for downhill skating), and Tunnel Products are just a few of the other skateboard components that were developed. The initial safety equipment was made specifically for skateboarders. Sims Skateboards and Dogtown Skates were two other skateboard businesses that prospered. The first skateboarding teams to emerge were the Santa Monica, California-based Zephyr Skateboard Team and Skateboarding-related organizations like the U.S. Skateboard Association (USSA) and the World Skateboard Association started to emerge (WSA). The objective behind the creation of teams and associations was to unite skaters, and they were successful in this. Thrasher and Trans-World Skateboarding were two further skateboarding publications that emerged in the 1980s. Even the skateboarding clothes market, Vision Street Wear, had begun to take off. Skateboard stunts have become more complex and technical, making them harder for beginners to do.

Beginning in 1990, a global recession had a significant impact on the whole skateboard business. Street skating had become popular again, and businesses started to reexamine the market. Skateboarding has returned by the middle of the 1990s. The “Extreme Games,” which are now known as the X-Games, were when this sport first started to get significant recognition. Old school skaters have come back, and the sport still leans toward the streets. The media’s impact on 2000 was significant. It has changed from being an underground spectator sport to one that is increasingly popular. More than 2000 skate parks have been constructed by the year 2004. In contrast to the pace of 6.6 mph in the 1920s, 2010 saw World Speed Records for downhill boarding clocked at speeds up to approximately 81 mph. Downhill boarding was outlawed in Southern California in 2011, the birthplace of skating, and as a result, skateboarding faced danger in that region. Although this sport hasn’t yet qualified for the Olympics, it might in 2016.
