To whom did Russian clubs lose in Europe in a year? The list of rivals becomes sad

Our clubs continue their unsuccessful performance in Europe. Spartak left the Champions League, Rubin left the Conference League with shame, and Sochi lost to Partizan in an offensive way. We recall how other Russian clubs performed in European competitions over the past year.

“Dynamo”

The capital club began its European path from the 2nd qualifying round of the Europa League. In September 2020, the winner was determined based on the results of one match. Dynamo unexpectedly lost on the road to the modest Lokomotiv from Tbilisi, conceding two goals after the break. The Muscovites responded with a goal from a penalty kick performed by Komlichenko, but this was not enough to advance to the next round.

Dynamo flew out of the Europa League qualification in disgrace, and captain Anton Shunin called their performance in European competitions a failure.

“It was a failure, what else can you say. A dull game and a disgusting result – this is not how we imagined these European cups. Our fans too. I want to apologize for that. I will not look for excuses, there are none. We are all wildly upset, but football is such a thing that in a day you have to pull yourself together and think about the next game. We have to work hard in the championship and do everything to be in the next Euroseason – there are no options here, ”Shunin wrote on his Instagram.

Immediately after the defeat in Tbilisi, rumors appeared in the press about Kirill Novikov’s departure from the post of Dynamo’s head coach. But the 39-year-old specialist resigned two weeks after being defeated by Khimki in the 9th round of the RPL. And the current head coach of Muscovites, Sandro Schwartz, has not yet managed to bring the team to European cups.

“Rostov”

A week after the departure of Dynamo, Russia lost another club in European competition. Rostov started from the 3rd qualifying round, where he was opposed by Maccabi from Haifa. Valery Karpin’s team played at home, but this did not save her from the final defeat. Shomurodov opened the scoring, but Maccabi quickly bounced back and scored the winning goal in the second half. After the game, Karpin was calm and began to complain about the RPL level.

“The level of our championship, unfortunately, is the same. Without looking for excuses, this is our given. Not the level of Georgia, probably, but Israel – yes. This is not the first year that European Cups have shown this, ”said Karpin.

CSKA

CSKA played in the group stage of the Europa League in the 2020/2021 season. On paper, the Moscow club did not get the strongest group: Dynamo (Zagreb), Wolfsberg and Feyenoord. In fact, everything turned out differently – CSKA did not win a single victory, scored only three points and finished the performance in the group in last place. At the same time, Goncharenko’s team never scored a single goal in home matches.

CSKA lost their chances of reaching the Europa League playoffs after a home defeat to Wolfsberg in the 5th round. The very next day, the army team published a short message addressed to the team’s fans.

“It will still be. The south wind will blow. Thank you for your support, “- wrote the press service of CSKA on Twitter.

But last season in the RPL, the army team failed, taking only sixth place in the RPL, and for the first time in a long time did not make it to the European cups. Now CSKA with its new head coach Alexei Berezutsky has a bad start this season.

Krasnodar

At the end of the 2019/2020 season, the bulls took third place in the RPL and got a ticket to the Champions League qualification. Krasnodar beat PAOK twice with the same score 2: 1 and for the first time in history found itself in the main draw of the main European Cup tournament. Three Russian clubs at once got into the group round of the Champions League (now we can only dream of this).

Krasnodar got a very strong group with Chelsea, Sevilla and Renn. After four rounds, the Russian team lost all chances of reaching the 1/8 finals (two defeats from Sevilla, one from Chelsea). However, the end of the tournament Murad Musaev’s charges played quite well, beating Rennes and drawing at Stamford Bridge.

Krasnodar finished the group stage in third place and made it to the Europa League playoffs. But the bulls did not have a Euro spring. Dynamo Zagreb (the one that beat CSKA in the group) won two victories and knocked our club out of the tournament. However, against the background of other Russian teams, Krasnodar performed well in Europe.

“Zenith”

Last season, the Russian champion ended up in the Champions League as a team from the first basket. His group rivals were Borussia Dortmund, Lazio and Club Brugge. Looking ahead, let’s say that Sergei Semak’s team never won a single victory. Two defeats to Borussia, two to Club Brugge, one to Lazio. And only in the home match with the Romans, the blue-white-blue did not manage to lose.

A lot of criticism poured out on Zenit, but the general director of the club, Alexander Medvedev, linked the reason for the departure with the lack of competition in the RPL.

“Is Zenit’s departure from European cups connected with the fact that the team has little competition in the RPL this season and a big lead over its rivals? I’ll say banality, but competition is the main factor in the growth of both team and individual skill.

If there is no competition in the domestic championship, then it is difficult to play at the level of European teams in a higher level tournament. We must prepare for this. But our championship, despite Zenit’s lead, has become more interesting in terms of the game, ”Medvedev said.

This season Zenit will again play in the Champions League main draw.

“Locomotive”

Lokomotiv, like Zenit, took the last place in the league championship group, although it turned out to be very difficult. The railroad workers never lost to Atlético (two draws), but still did not make it to the European Cup spring. Two defeats to Bayern, one to Salzburg, three points.

After leaving the tournament, Loko head coach Marko Nikolic noted the character of his players.

“What are your thoughts after the end of the Champions League? Firstly, everything was in order in terms of the composition in the first four rounds, and the last two games were not normal, the situation changed every minute, it was necessary to change the scheme, the players were eliminated, just unlucky 10 days for us. I will say again that the result was unfortunate, but for me the team showed character. The players on the pitch were ready to fight despite their positions, ”Nikolic said.

This season Lokomotiv has found itself in the tournament with a lower rank and will soon recognize its rivals in the Europa League group.

Summarize. Over the past year, Russian clubs have suffered defeats from such clubs as Lokomotiv (Tbilisi), Maccabi (Haifa), Wolfsberg, Dynamo (Zagreb), Feyenoord, Bruges, Lazio, Borussia (Dortmund), Bayern, Salzburg, Chelsea, Sevilla, Benfica, Rakuv, Partizan. From this list it becomes sad.
