TASS, 13 Aug. The Junior national team of Russia on hockey (players no older than 18 years of age) achieved a significant and historic victory by winning the Cup/Glinka Gretzky. This was stated by the President of Federation of hockey of Russia (FHR) Vladislav Tretiak, quoted by the press service of the organization.
Cup Glinka/Gretzky took place from August 5 to 10 in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Russian team won the victory in all five matches at the tournament, in the final, beating the Canadians with the score 3:2. The Russians won the tournament for the first time since 1995.

“Our team won a very important, one might even say historic victory. Very pleased to note the success of Junior national team of Russia to 18 years who returned us the title of Champions of the memorial Glinka/Gretzky. It has been almost a quarter of a century since then, as our team won this prestigious trophy. I am convinced that FHR is on the right track on the organization of work with young players, reserve training, all built need a systematic approach. Hockey in our country has traditionally paid much attention, including from the leadership of the Russian Federation”, – said Tretiak.
“The tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, is considered the unofficial world championship, traditionally brings together the strongest and most promising players in the world according to their year of birth. And so important from the point of view of the development of young players tournament, the Russian team showed an excellent result, great team play, exemplary relationship between coaches, players and staff team. For us the success of young hockey players have a special meaning, in them we see good prospects for the generation change and a new hope of Russian hockey”, – said the head of the FHR.
Cup Glinka/Gretzky – the traditional summer tournament involving Junior teams. From 2007 to 2017 it was called “the memorial of Ivan Glinka” in honor of the famous Czechoslovak hockey player. The winner of the first tournament in the Japanese Sapporo and Yokohama in 1991 was the team of the USSR. The domestic players won the Cup Glinka/Gretzky for the fourth time and first since 1995. 22 times the gold medals won by team Canada, once the winners of the tournament became the team of Sweden, USA and the Czech Republic.
