How long will Volkanovski last on the featherweight throne?
Alexander Volkanovski comes with a winning streak of 19 wins. So he was brought to the very top of the UFC. After convincing triumphs over Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo, the Australian faced a tough test by Max Holloway. If in the first fight Alex the Great interrupted and outboxed the champion, then in the rematch everything was not so simple. The victory again went to the Australian, but this time there were many dissatisfied with that decision. Among them, Dana White was noted, who demanded to cancel the result of the fight. Nevertheless, Volkanovski remains with the belt.
In terms of fighting style, the Australian is a versatile fighter combining boxing and jiu-jitsu. Still, he prefers to fight in a boxing stance. Moreover, Volkanovski is very low for a featherweight (168 cm) and at the same time has a solid arm span (182 cm), which makes him an uncomfortable opponent for tall Max Holloway and Brian Ortega, who have a shorter arm span.
Plus, Alex is reaping the rewards of the UFC champion outside of the octagon. He became a mentor in The Ultimate Fighter, where his fighters face off against Ortega’s team.
How will Ortega oppose the agile Australian?
Brian Ortega earned the title shot thanks to his unconditional victory over Korean Zombie Chung Chan Sung last year. However, two years earlier, he admitted his only defeat of his career to Max Holloway. Max crashed the T-City in a standing position, which forced the doctor to intervene during the break after the fourth round, as Brian’s left eye was completely closed.
In that fight, Ortega showed his strengths and weaknesses. His strengths are definitely his elbow strikes from close range, which confuse any fighter. In addition, Brian is a tall fighter (175 cm), leading the fight from a long distance, which is logical. But he always has an ace up his sleeve in case of a close range move. Plus Ortega knows how to explode with a series of blows when no one expects it from him. T-City has very powerful and dangerous single strikes. But in order for his trump cards to work, he needs to dictate the course of the battle and set the rhythm.
The American’s weak point is his endurance. Holloway broke him due to the high pace, which Brian could not stand. In such cases, Ortega tries to transfer the fight to a horizontal plane, that is, to the ground. Do not forget that, although T-City started his way of learning martial arts from boxing, he has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. If you multiply this factor by his size, then he may have good chances against Volkanovski, but only if he manages to put Alex on the canvas.
Expert predictions for the fight
Most likely, the fight will resemble the first fight between Holloway and Volkanovski. Alex will be number two at the cage and will interrupt Ortega from a distance. But Brian will try to move the fight to the ground, where he has much more chances than standing. If the American wins, then only ahead of schedule, because he is not as hardy as the Australian.
Volkanovski knows how to keep a high pace and mobility for 25 minutes. Therefore, it is absolutely logical that it is Alex the Great who is the favorite of the fight. And we are inclined to believe that the Australian will win by decision. Moreover, according to the side judges, he looked preferable to Holloway in both fights. And it’s worth a lot.
