Gerard Piquet – on Messi’s departure: “In recent years, the quality of Barcelona’s management was not the best, and we were punished for it”

Barcelona defender Gerard Piquet commented on the departure of striker Lionel Messi from the team.

– It was not one of our best days. We’ve lost the greatest player of all time. We knew that day would come, but the team is still amazed, especially those of us who have spent many years in the same locker room with him.

The quality of Barcelona’s management has not been the best in recent years and we have been punished for that. When a player like Messi leaves, that’s okay. This is a difficult time for everyone, but we have to turn the page because we cannot change this situation. We have to play well and win, and then work even harder. Others can take this place and take the lead. But we won’t have Leo anymore. We have to turn the page and hope, ”Piquet said.

Earlier, Barcelona President Joan Laporta said the club could not afford to sign a new deal with 34-year-old Messi due to financial fair play conditions.

Messi’s deal with Barcelona expired at the end of June. On August 5, the press service of the Catalans issued an official statement that the Argentinean would not renew the contract. The main contender for the player is called PSG, which has already sent an official contract to the forward’s father and agent.

Messi is a Barcelona alumnus and played for the club from 2003 to 2021.
